Peggy Garbarino

Peggy Maguire Garbarino established herself as one of the most accomplished women bowlers in Staten Island history, combining extraordinary tournament success with a competitive career that spanned more than two decades.

Her defining performance came in the 1964 Staten Island Women’s Bowling Association Championship, where Peggy captured an extraordinary seven titles — All-Events, Singles Net and Gross, Doubles Net and Gross with Terry Ward, and Team Net and Gross. She also rolled the tournament’s high series of 654. Contemporary coverage chronicled her remarkable performance as it unfolded.

That historic tournament was only one chapter of an exceptional championship career. From 1962 through 1986, Peggy captured a record 27 SIWBA Championship titles, including five All-Events championships, with victories across every championship classification then offered. Her championship success spanning nearly a quarter century demonstrated both her dominance and remarkable longevity.

Peggy’s accomplishments extended well beyond the Women’s Championship. She was a fixture among Staten Island’s top competitors, producing some of the Island’s leading scores and earning recognition as the Staten Island Advance Woman Bowler of the Year in 1966. Her performances included a 666 series in 1965, at the time reported as the Island’s best, along with continued success in major local and professional competition.

Peggy was inducted into the Staten Island Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame for Superior Performance in 1990, recognizing a career that helped define an era of women’s bowling on Staten Island. Her legacy continues through the Peggy Garbarino Memorial Award, presented to the All-Events Gross Champion in the Staten Island USBC Women’s Championship.
