Ruth Dockter

Ruth Dockter was a pioneer of organized women’s bowling on Staten Island, dedicating more than four decades to the growth of the sport as a competitor, leader, administrator and mentor.

A charter member and longtime leader of the Staten Island Women’s Bowling Association, Ruth served as President, Vice President and Director and represented Staten Island as a delegate to state and national meetings for more than 40 years. She was also instrumental in the development of junior bowling, working locally and at the state level to create opportunities for generations of young bowlers.  Her impact on youth bowling was chronicled by the Staten Island Advance in 1977 in a feature appropriately titled “Ruth Dockter’s list of ‘kids’ goes on, and on ... and on.”

Ruth was an accomplished bowler in her own right.  At the inaugural SIWBA Championship Tournament in 1949, she captured both the All-Events and Singles titles. Over her championship career, she amassed 13 titles, including a tournament-record 11 Team championships — a record that still stands today.

Her service extended throughout women’s bowling.  Ruth served as President and Vice President of the Staten Island Women’s 600 Club and as a Director of the New York State Women’s 600 Club, while remaining a familiar presence in Staten Island bowling for decades.

Through more than 40 years of service, Ruth helped build the foundation of women’s and youth bowling on Staten Island, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond her own accomplishments on the lanes.
